Reflections

This page will feature my reflections of my work from throughout the year.

Canine Handling Experience Reflection

Using the Gibbs model of reflection (Oxford Brookes University 2016), I am reflecting my canine handling skills. During a training session, at a dog rescue centre I volunteered at, I had a dog who turned to me as a warning to bite me.

I was unaware until the trainer pointed it out as it was subtle behaviour, although he did keep trying to turn his body away which is a sign in the ladder of aggression (BSAVA 2009)...

Biomechanics Assignment Reflection

Using the Gibbs model of reflection (Oxford Brookes University, 2016), I am reflecting on the ‘Describing Movement’ assignment, for biomechanics. This focuses on the gait, locomotion, kinetics, and kinematics of a chosen animal.

When it was set, I felt anxious as this was the first long assignment of the course. The lecturer recommended not to do equine or canine, which made me worried, as I knew these animals would have the most research....

Journal Club Presentation Reflection

Using the Gibbs model of reflection (Oxford Brookes University 2016), I am reflecting on my journal club presentation which was completed and delivered with other students.

We were asked to present a critical analysis of a chosen journal. We picked ‘Modifying the Surface of Horseshoes: Effects of Eggbar, Heartbar, Open Toe, and Wide Toe Shoes on the Phalangeal Alignment, Pressure Distribution, and the Footing Pattern’ (Hüppler et al., 2016)...

Animal Management Module Reflection

Using the Gibbs model of reflection (Oxford Brookes University 2016), I am reflecting on the Animal Management module from the first semester of university, which also included an exam.  It focused on four different topics which included farm, equine, companion animal and therapy. This was a mixture of theory and practical lectures.

I felt positive about this module as I have previously completed a two-year Diploma in Animal Management, where studied some of these topics in depth. However, I was slightly apprehensive with the therapy and equine modules as I hadn’t previously studied these...

Mock OSPE Reflection

Using the Gibbs model of reflection (Oxford Brookes University 2016), I am reflecting on my mock OSPE practical exam. This resulted in a borderline pass for the canine section and a fail in the equine section.

The assessment for the equine section consisted of securing a horse, putting on a bridle, walking it up, standing for examination and picking a foot out. However, I was stopped before I could do the walk up as I had forgotten to untie the reins and therefore it was unsafe to carry on...

Semester One Exams Reflection

Using the Gibbs model of reflection (Oxford Brooks University, 2016), I am reflecting on my January exams where I had 4 exams over 3 modules. These included 2 anatomy exams, 1 biomechanics and 1 animal management exam.

I was really stressed and anxious preparing for the exams as these were the first set of exams I’d had in nearly 4 years, since my AS levels, and I didn’t know what to expect. I also had to adapt my revision techniques for university as there was too much information to write out note cards like I had done at school...

Functional Anatomy Workbook Reflection

This reflection focuses upon the functional anatomy workbook and I will be using the Gibbs model of reflection (Oxford Brookes University 2016). This workbook is worth 50% of the final grade of the module.

The workbook was made up of 6 sections which included an online quiz and a workbook which had an equine and canine section. The workbook content varied from labelling a given diagram to writing a detailed description of the anatomical features and functions of given structures...

Nutrition Presentation Reflection

This reflection looks at the nutrition presentation which was completed as part of the nutrition module. I will be using the Gibbs model of reflection (Oxford Brookes University 2016) to do this.

The presentation was based on a dog food we had been given in a group. We analysed the feed to find the nutritional content of the food and ours was adult weight control. We then had to make an advertisement video to market our feed to the public and make packaging. At first I was worried about this as I have limited technical ability...

Final Summary Reflection

After having a year out from education, in order to work and go travelling, I thought coming back to education would be easy as I had a break and time to reflect. However, I think this process made it harder as I was out of the flow of assignments and exams, especially exams as I had not completed these for 3 years prior to university. Completing reflections throughout the year, which can be seen in my portfolio, has enabled me to grow throughout my first year of university and meant I was able to learn a lot more. This reflection focuses on my first year as a whole and what I have learnt, I will be using the Gibbs model of reflection to do this (Oxford Brookes University, 2016).

My first year consisted of many modules, all of which taught me different things and helped me with aspects which will help towards when I become a qualified veterinary physiotherapist...
