Animal Welfare Issue: The Kennel Club Breeding Standards

The Kennel Club UK was founded in 1873. It was set up to ensure consistency during shows throughout the UK and to ensure that the dogs welfare was a priority (The Kennel Club Limited 2016 a). However, over the years the Kennel Club has set some breed standards which impact the welfare of the dogs involved.

The Kennel Club are aware that some of their breed standards effect the welfare of the dogs, as they have a Breed Watch page which lists the breeds of dogs whose breed standards cause them to be in pain or discomfort. Those breeds which are affected include; the Bassett Hound, Bulldog, German Shepherd Dog (GSD), Pug, St Bernard and Pekingese (The Kennel Club Limited 2016 b). These all have exaggerated features which impact on their welfare...

Personal Development Plan

Throughout most of my education I had wanted to be part of the medical sector, in particular, being a nurse. Therefore, this has always led me into science based outlooks and choices. However, my passion for animals took over and led me down the path of college studying an Extended Diploma in Animal Management. This allowed me to discover a whole range of different courses available, which included Veterinary Physiotherapy. Being from a canine based background, this hadn’t been an obvious option for me throughout my studies. Therefore, devising a personal development plan, allows me to reach realistic goals throughout my university studies and beyond finishing the course. In order to achieve my goals, I will need to evaluate my strengths within my current experience, skills, qualifications and employability. I will also need to assess my weaknesses as areas to improve upon to reach my goals. I may not always reach my goals in my preferred time frame and therefore my personal development plan will need to be adjusted throughout my career...

Animal Management Assignment

Common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) are in the primate family and come under the Haplorhini suborder. These are known for being diurnal, arboreal and they are part of a complex social organisation. Marmosets are part of the Ceboidea New World monkeys from Central and South America, and are in the Callitrichidae family (Wolfensohn and Honess, 2008). In the wild, their habitat consists of scrub forests and the edges of rainforests where they have a large territory. The marmoset is one of the most common callitrichids found in captivity, both in zoos and companion animals. Marmosets, along with all other primates are a controversial pet...

Moodle Task - How will reflection help me become a good therapist?

Reflection plays an important role in actively becoming a good therapist. Throughout the first semester of university, I have used the Gibbs reflective cycle to improve both my academic and professional skills.
